髓过氧化物酶（MPO）是一种四聚体含血红素蛋白，主要由中性粒细胞大量产生，在其中发挥重要的抗微生物作用。当粒细胞脱颗粒时，MPO会被释放到细胞外空间。作为中性粒细胞“呼吸爆发"的一部分，它能通过过氧化氢（H₂O₂）和氯离子（Cl⁻）生成次氯酸（HOCl）。此外，MPO还能利用过氧化氢氧化酪氨酸生成酪氨酰自由基。次氯酸和酪氨酰自由基均具有细胞毒性，可有效杀灭细菌及其他病原体。遗传性髓过氧化物酶缺乏症会增加个体患免疫缺陷的风险。
研究表明，MPO水平升高与冠状动脉疾病相关。2003年有研究提出，MPO可能作为胸痛患者心肌梗死的敏感预测指标。此后，大量文献（已发表逾百篇）进一步证实了MPO检测在心脏病患者中的临床价值。2010年的补充研究进一步优化了这一临床应用：通过联合检测MPO和C反应蛋白（CRP），相较于单独检测CRP，可更精准地预测死亡风险。
